Our Values and Virtues: Generous and Grateful
The children will be given the opportunity to develop their knowledge and understanding of Christmas, looking closely at the different gospels accounts on the birth of Christ. Additionally, they will also be starting their preparation for Confirmation.
The story of the people of God
The children will be given the opportunity to develop their knowledge and understanding of the structure of the bible and the forms of literature that are found in the different books. They will also be introduced to stories of the significant people in the Old Testament. They will discover what some of these stories tell us about their relationship with God.
Welcome to the planet’s coldest lands…Vast wilds and hostile territories – incredibly beautiful, yet often deadly. Take shelter from the elements or fall prey to icy winds and the deepest chill. Trek bravely and valiantly across treacherous terrain to the ends of the Earth, treading deep in snow or be pulled by a team of mighty sled dogs. Become part of an Antarctic rescue team, braving the elements to rescue terrified passengers from a ship struck by a deadly iceberg. So wrap up well everyone and settle by the fire. I’m just going outside and may be some time…
Electricity – the children will build on knowledge from year 4 by expanding on their understanding of circuits, whilst looking at how variable resistors work. They will also consider the impact of conductors and insulators on electrical circuits, having the opportunity to draw and build their own.
Living things and their habitats
This term the children will be looking at how living things are classified based on similarities and differences. They will be working scientifically to have a go at classifying living things in our own environment and researching significant individuals that helped to decide the classification system; including Carl Linnaeus.
Fallen Fields
Known as ‘the war to end all wars’ the First World War was a conflict that had a devastating effect on millions of people across the world. What started this global tragedy? What was life like for families on the home front as they waited for news of loved ones who were ‘missing in action’? How did the soldiers endure the terrible conditions in the trenches? How was a fragile peace finally achieved? We will always remember the fallen.
Through our Building the Kingdom work will consider the consequences of war and whether war is ever just.
RE
The children will be given the opportunity to develop their knowledge and understanding of the followers of Christ, looking at why disciples chose to follow Christ and the sacrifices of some Saints. They will also develop their understanding of Advent and be given opportunities to explore how we prepare for the coming of Christ.
Science
Light – this term we will be looking at developing an understanding of how light travels in straight lines and how this forms shadows. We will consider how different materials let different amounts of lights through and how our eyes let light in to allow us to see.
Year 6 Class Saint
Saint Maximilian Kolbe
Saint Maximilian Kolbe was a Polish Priest during the Second World War and was strongly influenced by his vision of Mary. When World War Two began, he was one of the only Franciscans to stay in the monastery and he opened up a hospital for those who had been injured. He also provided shelter for refugees. He was later arrested and sent to Auschwitz. After two months at the concentration camp, many men were sent to starve to death. Kolbe was not one of them, yet decided to trade places with one of the young man who still had a family at home. After two weeks Kolbe was still alive and was killed by injection. During his suffering he remained calm and prayed daily for the men suffering along side him.
